SoWat?: Society of World Affairs Today

SoWat? is a student-run organization that sponsors lectures, documentary film screenings, debates, and discussions about global political issues.  The club’s mission is to promote academic discussion through a forum where students and faculty can talk in an informal setting about global issues.  Occasionally, more formal events involve Rhodes community members and guest speakers. Over the past year SoWat? has hosted a variety of creatively framed faculty-student discussion panels including "What the Halal′s going on with Egypt?" "Shiver me Timbers, Somalian Pirates!," and "Headlies: The Viral Effect of Bias and the Mass Media."

SoWat? was formed in the fall of 2010 and was originally known as the International Studies Club. The name change to SoWat? in 2011 was intentionally designed to encourage students from all disciplines to attend, not solely International Studies majors.  The organization’s purpose is to raise conversation about international issues, raise global awareness, and enhance student/faculty participation on a variety of issues.
